IN-GROUND GARDENING TIP: "GARDEN COMPOST AND LEAFMOULD ARE AMONG THE BEST MATERIALS FOR ENRICHING SOIL...[well-aged] manure can also be used."  (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England, 2003: www.kew.org)

"Herbaceous perennials respond well to an annual feeding with well-composted farmyard manure..." (Dr. John Ferguson, biochemist and gardening author)

"Do not buy peat in any form..." (2003 directive from The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England) (for more, see their article, "Gardening Without Peat," http://www.kew.org/ksheets/peat.html)

Earth-friendly COMPOST soil amendment REALLY WORKS!

TIP: Hey, Do-It-Yourselfers!  BUILD YOUR OWN rotating, rodent-free compost bin...the experts show you how: http://www.popularmechanics.com/home_journal/how_to/4234559.html

Coconut fiber may be found in specialty garden supply stores or online:

CONTAINER GARDENING TIP: Since 2003 The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England has recommended the use of coconut fiber (coir) instead of peat for container gardening, for environmental reasons.
IN-GROUND GARDENING TIP: Certain plants, like rhododendrons, require increased acidity in the surrounding soil.  Pine needles may be used as a mulch to increase soil acidity.
MONEY-SAVING TIP:

SAVE some "mean green" going *green* with a community composting program:

"Many local authorities now compost household waste, producing a good mulch or soil improver at a very reasonable price.  Contact your local authority for further information."  (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, England 2003)

Peat bog conservation helps preserve waterfowl wildlife habitat. What you choose to use in the soil here...
...can make a POSITIVE difference here!
Peat Bog Conservation Preserves American Eagle Habitat
also loon habitat, swan habitat, whistling tree duck and other mate-for-life bird habitats, in addition to game bird habitats

Did you know...YOU CAN HELP PROTECT tens of billions of dollars in U.S. natural resources?

Peat bog conservation reduces our carbon footprint; preserves waterfowl wildlife habitat; and a host of other good things, including water filtration of heavy metals, flood prevention which would otherwise fall on the taxpayer to remedy, and support of our national $10B fishing/hunting/trapping industry, which is augmented by an additional $10B in federal conservation funding.  Peat bog conservation also supports untabulated tourism value.
